Author Spotlight, Paul Deslandes.

Today's spotlight is on Paul Deslandes, author of the wonderful picture books "The Garden Monster," and "Kodi and the Mystery of Komodo Island."

What inspires you?

My children were my first inspiration to write my debut book, "The Garden Monster." But after falling in love, once again, with writing, I now get inspiration from all walks of life. Rather annoyingly, most of my ideas come in the middle of the night when i'm desperately trying to sleep, and they can sometimes keep me up for ours. I only wish I remembered them all by the morning.

What are you currently working on?

I've written across several genres this past year, ranging from unfinished adult novels, to middle grade, lower middle grade, and picture books. Right now I am telling myself t concentrate on picture books, which is what I'm most passionate about, however, tomorrow my mind will likely wander to some sort of middle grade fantasy idea.

What do you enjoy?

My three biggest passions in life are, spending time with my family, writing books, and going to the gym. Life seems to flash by, the kids are growing up too fast, and there aren't enough hours in the day to do everything I enjoy, so I try to squeeze in what I can. (Around the kids clubs, cleaning, ironing). Oh, and I love football (Liverpool supporter) only i'm too broken to play any more.

A bit about your books and you.

My first book, The Garden Monster, was inspired by my two children, Theo and Jude. The book has been well received and is a favourite of many children I have met. I took a break from writing after that, but then wrote my next book, Kodi and the Mystery of Komodo island. Which is a very fun adventure story about a Komodo dragon detective. The kids are sure to enjoy and love this one, especially the humour thrown in.

Both books are written in rhyme, which I love doing. I find it challenging and rewarding, and it's great for child development.

When I am not writing, I'm busy working. I've been a police officer for almost 19 years, but I am at the stage of my life where I get my enjoyment from my writing, as it allows me to be expressive and make use of my creative mind.

I can't wait to bring out some more books in the future and sharing all my wonderful stories.

Paul's books will be for sale at the Pop-Up Bookshop on the 8Th April at The Royal Albion Hotel Broadstairs.
