Introducing James Hobson, local writer and keen historian and our newest member of the Pop-Up Bookshop.
What inspires you ?
Modern British history inspires me- especially from 1600 to 1900. I am fascinated by the Civil War and Oliver Cromwell in the seventeenth century and then the Georgians and the Regency. Within that period, my focus is on the poor and oppressed, radical and republican movements and protest. I also have an unusual interest in stagecoaches. So I have written about Jane Austen's England, the English Civil War and Oliver Cromwell, the execution of Charles I, Victorian radical thinkers, and Georgian diaries. And stagecoaches.
What are you currently working on?
I have just finished a biography of a Georgian High Court judge, Edward Law, later Lord Ellenborough, as a part of a general book about the Georgian establishment- the lawyers, bishops, politicians and the royal family, and the way they dealt with the radicals who opposed their rule. I try to be fair in my writing, but on the whole I don't find much good about these people
What else do you enjoy, apart from writing?
I tale part in local politics as a Town Councillor and enjoy helping at the Dickens House Museum. I am hoping to play a role on the St Peter's Tour as well. I also take an active part in the Thanet University of the Third Age.
What's coming next?
My ninth book is dues to be finished in March 2025, so you can imagine it is going rather slowly! It is a departure for me, as it is about the Georgian ruling classes and was inspired by Bridgerton, Sanditon and similar programmes. I can't say any more because I worry that somebody else will like my idea and do it quicker and better!
